Federal authorities have identified Gabrielle Giffords‘ shooter as Jared Lee Loughner of Arizona. He is 22 years old and opened fire around 10:22 a.m. local time with a pistol that had an “extended magazine” on it. See our original post on Giffords’ shooting here.
It has also been learned that U.S. District Court Judge John Roll was among those killed in the shooting. He was the chief judge in Arizona, appointed in 1991 by the first President George H.W. Bush. He became chief judge in 2006.

It is also believed that a young child was killed in today’s shooting. In all 5 are confirmed dead and at least 6 were injured.
Gabrielle Giffords in now in intensive care and doctors are “optimistic” about her recovery. Physicians say that the bullet actually passed through her head.
President Barack Obama called the shooting “an unspeakable tragedy” and that such “a senseless and terrible act of violence has no place in a free society.”
Newly elected House Speaker John Boehner said, “An attack on one who serves is an attack on all who serve. Acts and threats of violence against public officials have no place in our society. Our prayers are with Congresswoman Giffords, her staff, all who were injured, and their families. This is a sad day for our country.”
