No, sorry, April Fools Day is over. This is for real.
Japan is planning to have a two-legged robot walk on the moon’s surface by the year 2020. There will also be a follow-up mission involving both astronauts and robots, according to a new plan that was proposed on Friday by a government group.
Details of the plan, including what technologies will be involved and the budget for the mission, will be laid out within the next 24 months.
The overall plan will be finalized in May, once the public has had a chance to weigh in on the proposal.
The group also wants to launch a system to detect ballistic missile launches and another to analyze radio signals sent in space.
No word yet on when the space robot will battle Godzilla and Mothra.
