James von Brunn, the 89-year-old who carried out a shooting rampage at the Holocaust museum in Washington, D.C. back in June, has died in a prison hospital.

Spokesperson Denise Simmons says von Brunn died just before 1 p.m EST on Wednesday at Butner Federal Prison in North Carolina.

Von Brunn had been awaiting trial for the shooting death of a security guard, Stephen Tyrone Johns,  at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Prison officials had previously stated that chronic medical issues had complicated a psychiatric evaluation von Brunn, a white supremacist who had written anti-Semitic posts on the internet.

James Von Brunn had previously served six years in prison on federal attempted kidnapping, assault and firearms charges after what he called a “legal, nonviolent citizens arrest” of members of the Federal Reserve Board of Governors. At the time, police said he wanted to take the Board hostage because of high interest rates and the country’s financial problems.
