J.D. Salinger, author of the literary classic “The Catcher in the Rye”, has died. He was 91 years old and lived in Cornish, New Hampshire.

Salinger reportedly died of natural causes at his home.

Published in 1951, “The Catcher in the Rye” became his most famous work with its distinctive depiction of its teen protagonist Holden Caulfield.

He began his literary career writing for magazines in New York, with “The Young Folks” published in 1940. After serving in World War II, he returned to New York and wrote “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” in 1948.

Salinger frequently wrote about the subject of rebellious youth in his stories of the Glass family, as well as “Franny and Zooey,” a collection of short stories.

He hadn’t had a published work since 1965 and mostly kept to himself, having turned away the attention of the literary world and the news media for years.
