Ingmar Guandique, the man convicted of killing former D.C. intern Chandra Levy in 2001, was sentenced today to 60 years in prison.
Guandique, a 29-year-old illegal immigrant from El Salvador, won’t be eligible for parole until he’s at least 80 years old, according to Friday’s ruling from D.C. Superior Court Judge Gerald I. Fisher.
“I think he is a dangerous person,” Fisher said. “I think he is a dangerous person to women in particular, and I think will remain one for quite some time.”
Susan Levy, Chandra’s mother, addressed the killer during the sentencing hearing.
“Mr. Guandique, you are lower than a cockroach,” she said, before closing her statement with: “f–k you.”
Guandique appeared to be cry when the judge asked for his comments, and maintained his innocence.
“I’m very sorry for what happened to your daughter,” Guandique said, speaking to Levy’s parents via an interpreter. “But I had nothing to do with it. I am innocent.”
Chandra Levy’s disappearance nearly a decade ago set off a media firestorm due to the fact that it brought attention to Rep. Gary Condit (D-Calif.), a married man with whom Levy was reportedly was having an extramarital affair.
The case began to take shape almost exactly one year ago. Guandique was eventually convicted of first-degree murder in November.
At the time, he was already serving a 10-year sentence for assaulting two women with a knife around the same time as Levy’s disappearance. He would have been released in December.
