The drawing of six identical winning numbers twice in a row in Bulgaria’s national lottery was a bizarre act of chance, officials have revealed.
The country’s Sports Minister, Svilen Neikov, demanded an official investigation after the numbers 4, 15, 23, 24, 35 and 42 were drawn (in a different order) by machine live on TV on September 6th and 10th. The strange occurrence resulted in suspicions of a fix.
The investigation, however, revealed that everything was A-OK with the machine and the drawing, according to chairman Konstantin Simeonov.
“We cannot talk about any manipulation,” he stated.
The odds of six identical lottery numbers being drawn twice in two consecutive drawings were one in more than 4 million…but not impossible, said mathematician Michail Konstantinov.
A record 18 people all guessed the six numbers when they were drawn the second time around. Each one got $7,700. No one won the top prize the first time.
“This is happening for the first time in the 52-year history of the lottery. We are absolutely stunned to see such a freak coincidence but it did happen,” a spokeswoman said.
