Iceland is literally being torn in half by a volcano that erupted early Sunday morning.
The eruption began just after midnight local time and saw smoke and lava being strewn through the surface of the Eyjaafjallajokull Glacier. The location of the eruption, beneath a glacier, is a cause for concern as there are now fears of flooding if the eruption causes ice to melt. Fortunately, however, the area is very lightly populated, which made evacuations relatively easy to facilitate.
This is the first eruption for this volcano since 1821. Scientists say there was little warning about the eruption.
Some of the first video footage has just been released of the Iceland volcano eruption.
Take a look below for video filmed by the Icelandic coast guard of the volcano eruption near Eyjafjallajökull Glacier.
