In a surprising announcement this morning, I Want Revenge, the early Kentucky Derby favorite (3-1), has been scratched from the 135th running of the popular race.
The 3-year-old horse was scratched this morning when trainer Jeff Mullins found a hot spot on the horse’s left front ankle.
“When the word came out that running could hurt the horse, I looked at both doctors and said, ‘Then this is no debate,’” Lanzman said. “‘What are we talking about? We’ll fight another day.’”
With I Want Revenge scratched from the rate, Friesan Fire is now the morning-line favorite.
Since the morning line was begun back in 1949, this is the first time that a favorite has been scratched on the day of the race.
