Hurricane Fred has rapidly turned into a Category 2 hurricane in the Atlantic Ocean.  Forecasters now warn that the storm could develop into a major hurricane later today.

Fred’s maximum sustained winds have now risen to around 105 mph (165 kph) as of early Wednesday morning. The National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida advises that Fred could progress to Category 3 storm later on Wednesday but should lose some strength on Thursday.

Fred is currently centered about 500 miles (805 kilometers) west-southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands and is now heading west-northwest at about 13 mph (20 kph).

Tropical Storm Linda, meanwhile, is moving out over the Pacific Ocean with sustained winds of about 65 mph (100 kph).
