guatemala sinkhole

Want to know the fastest way to get to China?  Why not take the new Guatemala sinkhole?

The country has had its share of crises lately.  First, Pacaya volcano erupted, sending ash and lava everywhere…and killing a news reporter.

Then, two days later, Tropical Storm Agatha struck, destroying homes and killing at least 100 people.

In the wake of the storm, the huge sinkhole above (and below) has opened up in Zone 2 of Guatemala City.  At least one home fell into the sinkhole when it opened up and a security guard may have been killed as well.

A sinkhole is a natural depression caused by the removal of soil by water.  This one seems large enough to have practically opened the gates of Hell.

So, in the wake of these twin catastrophes, what can you do to help?

Renata Avila of Global Voices in Guatemala says,

“I think that the best way to help now is to save the energy to help later: after the storm I am pretty sure we will face a nutrition crisis again because of lost crops and also a titanic task to rebuild communities. But if someone wants to donate in kind stuff here are the list of centers collecting items, and people can donate to untechoparamipais.org. These kids are amazing and are NOT corrupt.”

Do whatever you can to help. There is word of more sinkholes like this one opening up around the city, and to make matters worse, volcanic activity is rumored to be picking up again as well.
