Well, not really. However, there is a troubling glitch in the company’s new webcam facial recognition software – it can’t recognize African-American faces.
In the video below, Wanda (Caucasian) and Desi (African American) seem to be two employees at a local electronics store. They uncover the flaw in the webcam’s software.
The software picks up Wanda’s face right away, following it up, down, back and forth. With Desi, however, the camera remains completely motionless.
This leads Desi’s to state: “I think my blackness is interfering with the computer’s ability to follow me,” and assertion that, “Hewlett-Packard computers are racist.”
HP is now aware of the glitch, thanks to the video. They’ve even posted a public forum update stating that they’re looking into the matter.
