All around the internet, there is a shock-wave rippling over the latest homeless American Girl doll, “Gwen”.
Yes, now little girls across the country can take home a doll who, according to its biography, is homeless.
American Girl dolls have been wildly popular among children and parents alike for portrayals of girls from all walks of life. The company, which is owned by Mattel, is known for its tasteful, well-researched dolls…usually.
The biography that comes with Gwen, however, has folks up in arms. It reads like this:
After Gwen’s father walked out of the family, her mother lost her job. Fall came and went, and by the winter, they had no choice but to start living in the family car.
Seriously?
In response to the furor over the doll, American Girl corporate issued the following statement:
“Our singular goal with these stories is to help girls find their inner star by becoming kind, compassionate, and loving people who make a positive and meaningful difference in the world around them.”
Nothing screams “inner star” like homelessness.
Unfortunately, the idea is not all that outrageous. These are hard economic times and there are more people living out of their cars than we would like to admit, so maybe the idea of a homeless American Girl doll isn’t as crazy as one might initially believe.
What do you think? Is “Gwen” a good idea?
