A heartbroken male pit bull in Phoenix stayed by his dead mate’s side for 14 hours over the weekend, after the female pit bull was killed by a car.
The male pit bull was spotted nuzzling its dead mate, and passersby and local business owners began leaving food for the grieving dog.
Photos of the heartsick mutt began spreading virally on Facebook, prompting one outraged Chicago woman to call the mayor’s office in Phoenix to demand action from the city.
“They are going to look into this and find out why it took them 14.5 hours to get the dogs picked up,” Karyn Aspan said.
Animal Control said it was the Sanitation Department that stalled in picking up the dogs, but that now, the male is recovering…slowly.
His handlers say he’s so depressed he may not be adoptable.
“He is doing well,” said Rodrigo Silva of Animal Care and Control. “He’s a little withdrawn and he appears to be very sad.”
“If he continues to show these signs of withdrawal we will place him in a recovery home that can help him with his grieving,” Silva added.
“I am not certain we will be placing him up for adoption.”
They will decide the dog’s fate later today, though many interested people have reached out to take the loving pit bull into their homes.
