The Harvard Crimson is reporting that a student was shot in the abdomen near Harvard Square and that the police are looking for several assailants. The Harvard shooting occurred just before 5pm this afternoon, local time.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital and is in “stable” condition.
The shooting took place at the entrance to the Kirkland House dormitory. The victim later collapsed on Dunster Street.
Harvard President Drew Gilpin Faust got to the scene by 7:45pm but declined to comment on the shooting before venturing into Kirkland House to check on the residents.
Kathleen Breeden, a senior who lives in Kirkland House, states that she could make out three muffled gunshots and was terrified to leave her room.
“We didn’t know what was going on,” she said. “A lot of people were calling and checking on us to see if we were all OK. ”
“Harvard is really, really safe. It is actually kind of shocking.”
She says that around 20 minutes later, a policeman knocked on her door to tell her to stay inside.
Police are currently looking for two to three shooters. The investigation is ongoing at this hour.
