Many people are wondering what they can do to help Haiti in the wake of a 7.0 earthquake that has potentially left up to 100,000 people dead and destroyed towns and villages.
Can one person really make that much of a difference? The answer is “yes”.
Here are just a few ways you can help:

1. Text Yele to 501501
By texting the word “Yele” to 501501, you immediately donate $5 to the Yele Haiti Earthquake Fund. The fund was established by singer Wyclef Jean, who was born in Haiti. Your donation will be automatically added to your cell phone bill.
2. Text Haiti to 90999
By texting “Haiti” to 90999, you immediately donate $10 to the American Red Cross. Again, this donation will be tacked on to your cell phone bill.
3. Call 800-REDCROSS
This is the phone number for the Red Cross is texting isn’t your cup of tea. Give them a call and make a donation…any donation will help. You can also visit them on the web at www.redcross.org.
4. Call 888-256-1900
This is the number for Mercy Corps, a team of 3,700 professionals helping turn crisis into opportunity for millions around the world. Mercy Corps exists to alleviate suffering, poverty and oppression by helping people build secure, productive and just communities. They are deploying an emergency team to Haiti as we speak. You can also donate directly here.
5. Call 1-800-4UNICEF
UNICEF has issued a statement that “Children are always the most vulnerable population in any natural disaster, and UNICEF is there for them.” UNICEF requests donations for relief for children in Haiti via their Haiti Earthquake Fund.
6. Call Operation USA at 1-800-678-7255
Operation USA is appealing for donations of funds from the public and corporate donations in bulk of health care materials, water purification supplies and food supplements which it will ship to the region from its base in the Port of Los Angeles. Donate online at www.opusa.org, by phone at 1-800-678-7255 or, by check made out to Operation USA, 3617 Hayden Ave, Suite A, Culver City, CA 90232.
7. Stillerstrong
Ben Stiller‘s Stillerstrong campaign will be temporarily diverting all donations to support the Haiti relief effort.
8. Oxfam
Oxfam is rushing in teams from around the region to respond to the situation to provide clean water, shelter, sanitation and help people recover. Donate to Oxfam America online.
9. Doctors without Borders
Doctors Without Borders has set up clinics to treat injured in Haiti. Donate any amount so they can keep their efforts going.
10. Baptist Haiti Mission
The Baptist Haiti Mission is operating an 82-bed hospital that is “overflowing with injured.” Donate online to BHM and 100% of your donation will go to the relief effort.
11. World Vision
World Vision is a Christian humanitarian charity organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. They have just set up a page for donations to Haiti. You can donate here.
12. Clinton Bush Haiti Fund
The Clinton Bush Haiti Fund was just established on January 13, 2010. The former U.S. Presidents are teaming with President Barack Obama to help the people of Haiti. You can donate at http://www.clintonbushhaitifund.org.
Actor Rainn Wilson of The Office posted on his Twitter account to support the organization Planting Peace, which works primarily with orphanages in Haiti.
House star Olivia Wilde tweeted that she will send personalized videos to those who donate $200 or more if they email her their electronic receipts. First, donate here: http://tinyurl.com/r7sz52 and then email owhelphaitinow@gmail.com with your $200 + receipt to get your video.
