What is GYT09?  The month of April is “Get Yourself Tested” Month.

After the premiere of “Pedro” tonight on MTV, the Kaiser Family Foundation, Planned Parenthood, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the New York City Department of Health and MTV launched an effort for you to Get Yourself Tested at GYT09.org.

According to a press release, GYT is “a campaign to increase testing or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among those under 25 years old.” Did you know that 50 percent of all sexually active people under 25 have an STD?  Not only that, but nearly 10 million 19- to 24-year-old adults contact a new sexually transmitted disease each year.

The GYT09 campaign is taking place at just the right time.

Getting yourself tested is now easier than ever.  All it takes is a swab of the cheek.  Then, an AIDS test result can be determined within about 20 minutes.

Gonorrhea, Chlamydia, and Herpes can be diagnosed just as quickly, in fact, this new guide tells you how to prevent Herpes AND stop new outbreaks for those who already have it.  Check it out here.

MTV is offering an incentive too – a trip for 2 to the red carpet at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards if you get tested at your nearest clinic.

You can find one close to you by texting your zip code to 49809. For more info on the campaign, head to GYT09.org, visit your nearest Planned Parenthood center or check out the campaign’s Facebook application.
