Green Lantern GayWell, DC Comics has finally announced which one of its comic superheroes would be coming out of the closet.

The Green Lantern is gay.

Don’t panic, though, it’s not the Green Lantern that Ryan Reynolds plays in the movies.

That Green Lantern was Hal Jordan and is, by far, the most popular version of the character.

Instead, says James Robinson, who writes the new series, the original Green Lantern, Alan Scott, is the retooled gay version of the classic hero whose first appearance came in “All-American Comics” No. 16 in 1940.

So really, it’s more of an “alternate universe” (actually, Earth Two) version of the Green Lantern, not the one who’s in the Justice League and has been seen on the big screen…which sort of makes it seem like a cop-out on the part of DC Comics.

Scott never even wore the green body suit. He wore green pants, a green cloak, and wielded an odd lamp that housed mystical green flame. He was also vulnerable to wood…yes, wood.

The original Green Lantern was well received at first, but by the end of the 1940s he was reduced to being a sidekick to Streak the Wonder Dog. After that, it was all downhill from there and he was eventually replaced by Hal Jordan, the Green Lantern that fans are familiar with today.

Alan Scott isn’t DC Comics’ first gay superhero. Batwoman came out as a lesbian several years ago, but the Green Lantern is DC’s first “major” gay character.

Still, not everyone is pleased with the decision.

When it was first revealed that a superhero would come out as being gay, the organization One Million Moms released a statement saying, “Why do adult gay men need comic superheroes as role models? They don’t but do want to indoctrinate impressionable young minds by placing these gay characters on pedestals in a positive light.”

GLAAD issued a response saying, “The idea that a comic book character will make young people gay is as outlandish as saying it will give them a green power ring and the ability to fly. Even more outlandish is the idea that there are ‘one million moms’ who believe this hate group’s anti-gay nonsense. From Christian churches to sports fields, to now even fictional comic book worlds, our culture overwhelmingly supports gay and lesbian Americans and that’s what anti-gay groups like this are working against.”
