I admit, when I noticed the little symbol up in my browser the other day, I didn’t know what the heck was going on. Then, it hit me that Google must have changed their favicon again. Did they ever.

Not wanting to settle for anything bland or even subtle this time, they seem to have gone with a lower case “g” surrounded by the familiar four-color-Google-rainbow in surprisingly hideous fashion.  The first thing that hit me was that it kind of looks like the old Partridge Family bus…

I guess it’s time to break out the bell-bottoms and see what Danny Bonaduce is up to.

According to Google, this beast of a favicon is party based upon a design by André Resende, a computer science undergraduate student at the University of Campinas in Brazil.

Marrisa Mayer, the company’s Vice President, Search Products & User Experience had this to say last time the company made a change:

“The reason is that we wanted to develop a set of icons that would scale better to some new platforms like the iPhone and other mobile devices. So the new favicon is one of those, but we’ve also developed a group of logo-based icons that all hang together as a unified set.”

OK, sure whatever. What does this blend with? Maybe it’s just me.

I’ll leave you with the following look at some of the possible Google favicons that never made the cut (thanks to TechCrunch for the photo).

Come on, get happy!…
