Google finally jumped on the “layoff bandwagon” today, announcing the release of 100 recruiters and 70 engineers.

In the last dotcom collapse, Google management kept right on hiring while every other tech shed its staff.  They were a symbol of hope for Silicon Valley’s unemployed engineers.

When Google filed to go public, co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin promised to treat their employees well, increasing spending on perks and pay over time, rather than cutting them.

Page and Brin have spared their employees by releasing contractors by the thousands, from Google cafeterias to its in-house tech-support kiosks. The pain of the economy, however, has at last hit Google’s staff.  Google has really only had one previous staff layoff of note, eliminating superfluous employees after acquiring DoubleClick.
