Fail Nation: A Visual Romp Through the World of Epic Fails.

Google has taken a huge step in helping you control what comes up when people search for you by including your Google Profile in its search results.

Don't have a Google Profile?  No problem.  Just Google the word "me", seriously, and you'll see an option right at the top of the results that will take you to your Google Profile.  From there, you can add info to it and use it just like you would use your LinkedIn profile.  In fact, the Google Profile now poses a serious threat to LinkedIn.

It's important to note that your Google Profile results will show up appear at the bottom of the results page, so anyone looking for info about you will still be influenced by the other search results that come before it.  This is still a great way to exercise at least a little more control over what people can find out about you online.

From the official Google Profile anouncement:

To give you greater control over what people find when they search for your name, we’ve begun to show Google profile results at the bottom of U.S. name-query search pages. These results offer abbreviated information from user-created Google profiles and a link to the full profiles. We’ve also added links so it’s easy to search for the same name on MySpace, Facebook, Classmates and LinkedIn.

Google even gives you some tips to get you on the right track:

  • Add information about yourself on the Edit profile page so people can find you when they search by keywords associated with your profile. For example, include details such as the name of your hometown, your job title, where you work or go to school.
  • Link to your profile on another website (for instance, your blog or online photo album).
  • If you have a common name, add enough information about you to distinguish your profile from similar ones. Photos are especially useful.
  • Verify your name, and get a “Verified” badge on your profile. Verify alternate addresses on your account.

To Google's credit, your Google Profile not included in the search results without your permission.
