Will it be an iPhone killer? Probably not. It’s pretty cool, though.
As expected, Google announced today you can now buy a contract-free, unlocked Nexus One smartphone directly from Google for $529. You can also buy a subsidized phone through T-Mobile for $179.
Via the Google Web store, you can purchase a new phone without service, or you can choose one with service through a partner. Smartphones with a service contract can be purchased at a lower price.
As of Tuesday, you can buy a phone through T-Mobile only, although that will soon change.
Google’s Nexus One will be available through Verizon in Spring 2010.
The official site at http://google.com/phone went live right after Tuesday’s press conference. There, you can now buy the Nexus One for T-Mobile in the U.S., or unlocked. Options for Verizon and Vodafone (overseas) have been grayed out.
Google used hardware maker HTC to create the new Nexus One, which features a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen. The current GSM handset is compatible only with T-Mobile and AT&T in the U.S. and the 3G chip isn’t compatible with AT&T’s high-speed data network. A CDMA Verizon phone will be out by Spring 2010.
So what do you think? Are you going to be rushing out to buy a Nexus One?
