Happy Birthday, H.G. Wells.  That’s really all Google was trying to say.

After weeks of speculation amid strange and mysterious iterations of the Google logo, the search giant revealed on Sunday night that it was merely paying homage to the epic sci-fi author.

First, we were treated to Google’s “unexplained phenomenon” logo…

The company also sent out a cryptic tweet that, when translated, read “All your O are belong to us,” a play on the good old “All your base are belong to us” line from the 90’s.

Then, we saw the Google “crop circles” logo…

The company also sent another tweet with the map reference 51.327629, 0.5616088, which some sci-fi fans noted was the center of the small town of Horsell in Surrey. This was the spot where H.G. Wells set the first UFO landing in his novel The War of the Worlds.

On Sunday night, Google explained the latest, “alien invasion” logo…

Says Google:

Now, we’re finally acknowledging the reason for the doodles with an official nod to Herbert George, who would be 143 years old today.

Inspiration for innovation in technology and design can come from lots of places; we wanted to celebrate H.G. Wells as an author who encouraged fantastical thinking about what is possible, on this planet and beyond. And maybe have some fun while we were doing it.

The invasion of the logo by alien crafts and pods makes our series complete, but you’ll have to read the book to find out how Wells’ story really ends.

Google was also, no doubt, having a little fin with us and seeing what kind of viral buzz they could generate with the strange logo series.

We’re OK with being used as guinea pigs. It was a fun and worthwhile experiment. At least now we know that we aren’t really being invaded by aliens.
