Google is taking search to the next level. It's unclear whether the G-folks are trying to compete with Twitter, or possibly the upcoming Wolfram Alpha engine, which sounds intriguing.
Today, they've announced a search engine on steroids called "Google Squared", which Marissa Mayer discussed today at the company’s second annual Searchology event.
Google Squared extracts data from Web pages and presents them in search results as squares in an online spreadsheet.
“It is something that pushes search in an entirely new direction,” stated Marissa Mayer, Google’s VP of search products and user experience. “It is a hard, computer science problem to take this unstructured information and present it in a structured way.”
Google Squared should be ready for prime time from within Google Labs by the end of May.
Google is also previewing an upcoming feature called Search Options which will allow users to customize queries in greater detail than what can be done currently. The Search Options panel will allow users to filter search results based on time or type of site.
