Google has dropped the “Shopping” link from top navigation bar in Google searches and brought back the “Video” link instead.
It was just over a year ago (in November of 2007, actually) that Google did the exact opposite. They dropped the video link in favor of the shopping one. At the time, Google renamed “products” to “shopping” and that link remained at the top of every search results page.
Google has now decided to bring back “Video”. Google Video has stopped allowing uploads, so you would have thought that their emphasis on video was decreasing, but apparently not.
Has Google proven that they dislike affiliate marketing once and for all? Or do they simply know that video tends to lower bounce rates? We can’t be certain. It will be interesting to see if they eventually just connect that link directly to YouTube.
