Google is cracking down on so-called “black hat” marketers. Starting tomorrow, they are implementing a new policy that will disallow multiple display domains per ad group.
What that means is you can only have the same domain showing in a specific ad group in the display URL field.
For example, you cannot have one ad in an ad group with the display URL of www.mybluewidgets.com and another ad in that same ad group with the display URL of www.myredwidgets.com. Both ads in that shared ad group must have the same root display URL, so www.mybluewidgets.com and subdomain.mybluewidgets.com can be in the same ad group but the previous example is not allowed.
Confused yet? Here is the word from Google:
In an effort to provide more relevant results and a high quality experience for our users, we’ve made the decision to disallow multiple display URL domains within a single ad group. Going forward, all display URLs within an ad group must have the same top-level domain. Please note that this amendment to our policy applies to all advertisers, regardless of previous exceptions or acceptability of any ad groups.
For example, an ad group containing the following group of display URLs would comply with this policy because all URLs contain the same top-level domain, “example.com”:
* www.example.com
* www.widgets.example.com
* www.example.com/widgets/redwidgets/
* www.example.com/index.htmlOn the other hand, and ad group containing the following group of display URLs would not comply with our policy because their top-level domains don’t match:
* www.example.com
* www.example.widgets.com
No idea what we’re talking about? Congratulations, then, for “playing nice”. If you do know what we’re talking about, looks like the party’s over.
Maybe it’s time to head over to PPC Coach and pick up some new tricks.
