Can Google read your mind?  Perhaps, if a new advertising system has the desired effect.

This will be good news if you’re a Google advertiser.  If you are a consumer, it’s interesting to say the least.  If you are a privacy advocate, well, you’re probably about to start complaining.

Today, Google is introducing “interest-based” advertising as a beta test on its partner sites and on YouTube.  These ads will associate categories of your main interests, be it golfing, computing, cars, etc., with your web browser based on  the types of websites you frequent and the types of pages you view.

Google will then use that data to present you with more relevant advertisements.

Google has also launched a page where you are able to input a list of categories that you find appealing. If you don’t care for the new targeting options, this same page offers 2 ways to opt-out.

You can either 1) set a special opt-out DoubleClick cookie or by installing an add-on that protects your cookie or 2) block all the cookies sent from doubleclick.net.

Google promises to offer an option for AdSense publishers to deactivate interest-based targeting. Publishers will still need to update their privacy policy to reflect the new measures…
