taco titan glen bell dead

It is a sad day for fast food lovers everywhere.

The founder of Taco Bell has died. The California-based company announced this afternoon (Monday) that Glen W. Bell Jr. died on Sunday at his home in Santa Fe. He was 86 years old.

At present, the cause of death has not been released.

Glen Bell opened his first Taco Bell restaurant in 1962 after testing many other fast food-style restaurants in the L.A. area. Bell’s first venture in the restaurant business was in 1948, when he opened Bell’s Drive-In, in San Bernardino, Calif., which served hamburgers and hot dogs. He later tried to spice up the menu by adding Mexican food.

“Once he perfected his taco shell recipe, taco sauces and the convenient drive-thru concept he was ready to introduce the tastes and textures of Mexican food to mainstream America,” the Taco Bell statement said.

Taco Bell now serves more than 36.8 million people each week in more than 5,600 U.S. locations.

Bell, a World War II veteran, was born September 3, 1923 in Lynwood, Calif.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, three sisters, four grandchildren, and a chalupa.
