Insurance provider AFLAC has fired comedian Gilbert Gottfried over some insensitive Japan tsunami jokes he posted to his Twitter account.
Japan is AFLAC’s most important market.
Since 2000, Gottfried has served as the voice for AFLAC’s signature duck mascot in several popular TV commercials.
In a prepared statement, AFLAC says Gottfried’s jokes “were lacking in humor and certainly do not represent the thoughts and feelings of anyone at Aflac.”
The company went on to say it would begin a nationwide casting call to find a new voice. A new voice is already being used in the Japanese market.
