UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St-Pierre has been dominating the MMA world for the last few years and now it appears that he is ready to dominate another venue.
Recently, the UFC Champion signed a deal with online poker site 888 poker that will see him serve as an ambassador for the site and travel around playing in live poker event as well as playing online poker events for the site.
St-Pierre’s objective with this deal isn’t to dominate the poker world like he has MMA, but rather to further his foundation’s cause against bullying. The money he receives from the contract and raises during events will go to his anti-bullying foundation where he hopes to knock out bullying.
Of the deal, St-Pierre told reporters, “I am very excited to become a global brand ambassador for Team 888 poker. I have wanted to play poker for a while now as it is a great game of skill. It is not just your cards versus my cards; it is you versus your opponent.”
Itai Pazner, the Senior VP for 888 poker stated that their partnership will benefit both 888 and the UFC. According to Pazner, “The partnership agreement with Georges St-Pierre will strengthen our brand awareness around the globe and introduce 888 to the growing sport of MMA and its fans. It is exciting to have this international sports celebrity on board with us.”
St-Pierre will be the next in a line of UFC superstars to play in poker events. Former Light-Heavyweight Champion Forest Griffin and former UFC Heavyweight Light-Heavyweight Champion Chuck Liddell both have played in the World Series of Poker Main Event.
Fans of UFC know Georges St-Pierre’s history that includes a record of 22-2. He also is the current record holder for the most title defenses for a fighter in the Welterweight division. Now Pierre hopes to pound the poker world into submission while helping to put an end to bullying.
