New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner suffered a massive heart attack and died on Tuesday morning at the age of 80.

Steinbrenner suffered a heart attack at his home in Tampa, Florida and was immediately hospitalized.

Sources indicate that Steinbrenner was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The Yankees owner turned 80 on July 4th and has been in poor health for several years.

Steinbrenner has owned the Yankees since 1973, though his declining health forced him to hand over day-to-day operations of the team to his sons in 2006.

UPDATE 9:58 a.m. EDT – The family has issued the following statement:

“It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing. He was an incredible and charitable man. First and foremost he was devoted to his entire family – his beloved wife, Joan; his sisters, Susan Norpell and Judy Kamm, his children, Hank, Jennifer, Jessica and Hal; and all of his grandchildren. He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again.”
