Data from the $100 million GeoEye satellite, now located 423 miles above the Earth, has been integrated into UbiSoft’s new video game, Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X. (available for preorder below).
The game is an action-packed, modern jet combat thriller set above plenty of real-world locations. The game is due for release next week on various game consoles and the PC.
The data for the H.A.W.X. video game comes from the GeoEye Ikonos satellite, which can see things on the ground that are only 16 inches long! This data will serve as the backdrop for the various ground maps included within the game.
The Romanian game developers integrated the data with their own 3-D elevation technology to create super-accurate maps of the terrain.
“The whole point is to give the gamer a real sense of authenticity,” said Mark Brender, vice president of communications and marketing at GeoEye. “It does a much better job than a cartoon map of immersing the player in the experience.”
Sounds like this one should be worth a look.
