UPDATE: The President has just said that he accepted Gen. McChrystal’s “resignation.”
Gen. Stanley McChrystal has been fired.
The General, whose controversial comments in a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine led to a media firestorm, is no longer in charge of operations in Afghanistan.
President Barack Obama relieved him of his duties in Afghanistan moments ago.
McChrystal will be replaced by Gen. David Petraeus. You may recall that Petraeus is the General who recently collapsed during a hearing on Capitol Hill. Hopefully, he’s feeling better now that he will be overseeing the entire Afghanistan operation.
President Obama is scheduled to make a statement at 1:30 p.m. EDT, which should begin at any moment.
