Galactic Alignment: December 21, 2012 – Fact, Fiction or Just Marketing?

I'm not sure what to make of the recent buzz surrounding the Galactic Alignment that is supposed to occur on 12/21/2012.  I do know this...the movie should be pretty awesome.  Yes, there is now a movie about the supposed apocalypse that is to take place on 12/21/2012.   You can view the trailer below.

Much ado has been made of the winter solstice sun aligning with the galactic plane on December 21, 2012. But according to the computational wizard Jean Meeus (page 302 of Mathematical Astronomy Morsels), the solstice points were alignment with the galactic equator as recently as the year 1998.

In other words, the 2012 alignment isn’t unique. Consider the view from our local star, the sun. As seen from the sun, Earth crosses the Milky Way’s galactic plane (also called the galactic equator) twice a year, every year.  I don't know that this is really news-worthy stuff.

However, something IS supposed to happen, according to the Mayan calendar...either the end of the world, a spiritual awakening or both. Their calendar just STOPS.

The date December 21st, 2012 A.D. (13.0.0.0.0 in the Long Count), represents an extremely close conjunction of the Winter Solstice Sun with the crossing point of the Galactic Equator (Equator of the Milky Way) and the Ecliptic (path of the Sun), what that ancient Maya recognized as the Sacred Tree. This is an event that has been coming to resonance very slowly over thousands and thousands of years. It will come to resolution at exactly 11:11 am GMT.

Consider also that, in the New Testament, Jesus says to His followers that he will return in two days.  Of course, one day, in Biblical terms, is equal to about 1,000 years...and most scholars agree that the current dating system we use to mark time ("A.D." = Anno Domini = The Year of Our Lord) is probably off by several years...so perhaps 2012 marks the REAL 2,000 year anniversary of His death...and the Second Coming.

But hey, without getting too heavy, what we DO know is that it's going to be a movie starring John Cusack and Woody Harrelson.  If you don't feel like waiting 3 or 4 years to find out, just view the trailer is below...
