Today is Friday the 13th. Do you have a fear of Friday the 13th?
If so, you could be suffering from:
Triskaidekaphobia
Fear of the number 13
Paraskevidekatriaphobia
Fear of Friday the 13th (commonly misspelled as paraskavedekatriaphobia)
Perhaps you could even be suffering from:
Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia
Fear of long words (commonly misspelled as hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia)
Either way, if you suffer from any of these, here are a few Friday the 13th superstitions and factoids to be aware of:
- The 13 ball is the least likely number to be drawn in the UK lottery since it began back in 1994.
- It has been said that if 13 people sit down at a table together, all at once, they will all will die within a year.
- Do not name your children anything with 13 letters, example, Charles Manson.
- There are 13 witches in a coven.
- We had three Friday the 13ths in 2009, February, March and November.
- The British Navy is has a fear of Friday the 13th. Regardless, it built a ship named Friday the 13th. On its maiden voyage, the vessel left dock on a Friday the 13th and was lost at sea.
- If you were born on a Friday the 13th (like my father, for example) then today is your lucky day!
- Many tall buildings lack a 13th floor because if they had one, no one would want to stay on them. Most hospitals do not have a room 13 either.
- A baker’s dozen in bakery terms is a dozen loaves of bread with a 13th being offered to the devil so he won't spoil the other 12.
- Over 60 million people stay home from work, refuse to drive, or won't leave their homes on this unlucky day.
- The seal found on the back of a one dollar bill includes 13 steps on the pyramid, 13 stars above the eagle’s head, 13 war arrows in the eagle’s claw and 13 leaves on the olive branch.
- President Franklin D. Roosevelt refused to travel on the 13th day of any month and would never host 13 guests at a meal.
- The ill-fated Apollo 13 launched at 13:13 CST on April 11, 1970. The sum of the date’s digits (4/11/70) is 13. The explosion that crippled the spacecraft took place on April 13th.
- According to the British Medical Journal, the risk of a car accident in the UK increases by more than 50 percent on Friday the 13th.
- The first recorded person to die in a car accident was killed in New York City on Sept. 13, 1899.
