The heroic captain of ill-fated flight 1549, a flight that ended up making a dramatic emergency landing in the Hudson River earlier this year, climbed back into the pilot’s chair on Thursday morning.  This is his first commercial flight since the Hudson River incident.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is Captain Sullenberger,” he announced, and then to wait for a huge round of enthusiastic applause to subside.

Sully’s first flight was the 7:55 a.m. EDT US Airways flight from Charlotte to New York City.

“It’s a beautiful day for flying. We expect nice weather – smooth flying all the way,” the captain stated as passengers knowingly smiled at one another.

The flight carried 68 passengers, with just about a dozen seats open, unlike the overbooked return flight from LaGuardia to Charlotte, which US Airways had previously billed as Sully’s first return to the air.
