“Fire David Letterman” Movement Has Begun

The controversy surrounding David Letterman and his jokes last week about the daughter of Sarah Palin is far from over.

A new website, Fire David Letterman (firedavidletterman.com), has been lauched, taking the friction between the two celebrities to a whole new level.

According to the website, a Fire David Letterman rally has been set for Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at 4:30 Eastern Time at the Ed Sullivan Theater located at 1697 Broadway, New York, NY.

There is also now a Facebook group called Fire David Letterman Rally, which lists the following mission statement:

“CBS should fire David Letterman, Just like they fired Don Imus.”

Those planning on attending the rally are also being encouraged to join the Facebook group.

The whole train wreck began when David Letterman joked that Sarah Palin‘s daughter got “knocked up by A-Rod” during his Top 10 List of things that happened during Sarah Palin’s visit to New York. Things heated up more when Sarah Palin accused Letterman of aiming the joke at her 14-year-old daughter, Willow.

Letterman insists that the joke was about Bristol Palin and her pregnancy, although Palin had attended a Yankees game last week with Willow. Now, even some lawmakers are jumping on the Fire David Letterman bandwagon.

New York State Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb wrote a letter to CBS’ CEO, Les Moonves, in hopes that he would give David Letterman the axe. Kolb wrote that firing Letterman indicate that CBS would not stand for “demeaning and degrading comments about women.”

If Kolb’s letter doesn’t work, the Fire David Letterman rallies will try to get the job done. Tuesday’s rally is being led by Michael Patrick Leahy, an RNC delegate from Middle Tennessee who usually protests taxes, and helped organized the famed “tea parties” from a few months back.

Personally, I think this whole thing has gotten blown way out of proportion. Were the jokes tasteless? Yes…but that’s what David Letterman does for a living…tries to get laughs.

He even went so far as to apologize for the jokes, clarify their meaning, and invite Sarah Palin onto the show.
