UPDATE: Google has responded by pointing out AT&T's hypocrisy here.
The FCC is now going to officially investigate complaints by AT&T that Google Voice blocks calls to rural communities where local phone companies often charge higher connection fees.
Investigators sent a letter to Google on Friday requesting more information about Google Voice, which allows users to sign up for one number that is able to then route all incoming calls to a cell phone, office line or home phone number. It also permits users to make local, long distance, and international calls at very low rates.
AT&T has argued that Google Voice blocks calls to various rural neighborhoods to minimize what Google has to pay in access fees.
AT&T and other large phone companies must carry such calls.
