In fact, the term “Facebook” was the most-searched term of 2011, according to Experian Hitwise.

This was the third consecutive year that Facebook placed at the top of the annual list. The company’s name accounted for 3.1 percent of all searches in 2011, a 46 percent jump over last year.

In actuality, though, there were four variations of Facebook that made the top ten – Facebook, Facebook.com, Facebook Login, and www.facebook.com.  That means the world’s largest social network really owned 3.48 percent of the top 50 searches.  That’s an increase of 33 percent over last year.

Here are the top 10 search terms of 2011:

The term “YouTube” accounted for 1.36 percent of searches, up 21 percent over 2010.  Searches for the term “Yahoo” were also up 15 percent.

In a statement from Experian Hitwise, Simon Bradstock, general manager of the research company, noted that single-word searches increased 11 percent, thanks mostly to predictive search technology from Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

Facebook also topped the list of the world’s most-visited websites in 2011.  The social network accounted for 10.29 percent of all website visits, a 15 percent rise from last year.  Google’s network of websites, excluding YouTube, drew 7.7 percent of all web visits, a 7 percent jump.

If, however, you include YouTube in Google’s ranking, the search giant beats Facebook with 11.98 percent of all visits, a 22 percent increase from 2010.

  • Television - The top generic search term was “hulu” within the Television category.
  • Sports - The top searched-for athletes were Tiger Woods, Danica Patrick and Brett Favre. The top searched for sports team was the Dallas Cowboys.
  • News and Media - The top-searched person among News and Media sites was Casey Anthony, followed by Charlie Sheen and Kim Kardashian in 2011.
