Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook‘s head honcho, says that the social networking website is growing by 1 million users per week in the United States, according to an interview he did with MSNBC’s Today Show.
Matt Lauer then chimed in that the site is growing by more than 5 million users per week worldwide. This is a staggering growth rate, even compared to their most-recently-published figures.
Zuckerberg also states that a “few different lines” of monetization are gaining steam “very quickly” and that he’s particularly pleased with those results, given the current state of the economy.
Also in the interview, Zuckerberg reveals that when he began the site in 2004, he didn’t foresee it becoming one of the key ways that people share information over the internet. He just hoped that it wouldbe a service to help individuals do just that.
The interview also touches on some of Facebook’s privacy concerns that have surfaced over the past several days.
