Just this week, YouTube rolled out a new closed-captioning feature. It’s nothing too sophisticated, it just takes the audio as Google understands it and transcribes it on the user’s screen.
Looks like maybe they should have done a little more testing before they rolled it out to the public, though.
Nothing is funnier than watching the below clip from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit starring Kathy Griffin with the closed-captioning turned ‘on’. I knew I was in for a treat when “I know it’s hard” got transcribed as “hi”.
First, watch it below so you can get a sense for what is actually being said.
Then, double-click on the video so you can actually watch it over on YouTube and click on the little ‘cc’ icon down in the corner to turn the closed-captioning on.
You’ve never seen anything quite like it. “How are you?” “The United States.”
LOLOLOLOLOL. If anyone needs me, I’ll be in the hospital recovering.
