Elizabeth Edwards‘ cancer battle looks to be coming to an end, as doctors say she may have just weeks to live. She is presently at her home in North Carolina surrounded by family and friends.
UPDATE: Elizabeth Edwards has died
Her physicians have informed the wife of former presidential candidate John Edwards that treatment is no longer a plausible option. She is not currently experiencing any pain and is saying goodbye to members of her family.
In a post on Facebook, Edwards, 61, indicated that her cancer battle was drawing to a close, writing, “The days of our lives, for all of us, are numbered. … The days I do have are made all the more meaningful and precious.”
John Edwards was running mate to John Kerry in the 2004 presidential elections. It was on the day that they conceded the election that Elizabeth made it public that she had been fighting breast cancer during the campaign. After much treatment, the family began to have hope.
In November 2006, Edwards said, “I seem to be cancer free, knock on wood.”
In 2006, however, the cancer came back, this time spreading to her bones and couldn’t be cured.
In 2008, her husband publicly admitted that he’d had an affair with campaign videographer Rielle Hunter. He also admitted to fathering a child with her and the marriage ended.
On Monday, Elizabeth Edwards reached out on Facebook to those who had supported her throughout those turbulent times, writing, “It isn’t possible to put into words the love and gratitude I feel to everyone who has and continues to support and inspire me every day…To you I simply say: you know. With love, Elizabeth.”
