Eggner Ferry BridgeState officials in Kentucky are inspecting what’s left of the Eggner Ferry Bridge after a cargo ship carrying aviation parts struck it, causing a partial collapse.

Inspectors began checking out the bridge at daybreak this morning.

The three-story-high Motor Vessel Delta Mariner struck span “E” of the bridge around 8:00 p.m. last night.

The Kentucky Transportation Company is currently coordinating with the Coast Guard and Army Corps of Engineers to ascertain whether or not other vessels can safely pass under the main channel span.

Officials say the bridge is now closed to traffic, causing miles of backups in the area.  The Coast Guard has also blocked access to boat traffic at the Eggner Ferry Bridge.

Portions of the bridge collapsed into the water and also became attached to the ship.

Four vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the accident.  Fortunately, no one was injured.

“They were able to stop prior to any collision or any incident. They were able to warn other motorists on both sides of the bridge. They were able to exit, with the assistance of law enforcement, the bridge safely,” said Lt. Brent White with the Kentucky State Police.
