edmund fitzgeraldIt was on this date 34 years ago, on November 10, 1975, that the SS Edmund Fitzgerald (A.K.A. “Mighty Fritz”) wrecked and sank during a storm while on Lake Superior.

Launched on June 8, 1958, the Edmund Fitzgerald was the biggest ship on the Great Lakes for the next 13 years. The big ship went down with all hands, 29 crew members, about 17 miles from the entrance to Whitefish Bay.

The Edmund Fitzgerald had a total capacity of 24,100 tons and was 729 feet long. No communications were received from the ship. It’s now believed that a rogue wave sank the vessel in that early November storm.

The Edmund Fitzgerald later made the subject of Canadian singer Gordon Lightfoot‘s tribute, “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.”
