The Los Angeles area was shaken by a small but powerful earthquake on May 19, 2009. The 4.1 earthquake was an aftershock to the magnitude-4.7 earthquake that hit the region less than two days ago. So far, there are no reports of damage or injuries.
The quake hit at 3:49pm, local time, 6:49pm EDT, and was centered about 10 miles southwest of Los Angeles, not far from Los Angeles International Airport, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The aftershock could be felt from as far away as Palmdale, which lies about 50 miles to the north and even in San Diego which sits about 120 miles to the south.
Scientists seem to indicate that the latest quake was a typical aftershock.
“It’s a completely normal sort of pattern,” USGS seismologist Lucy Jones said.
