F My Life: It's Funny, It's True, Except When It Happens to You
Doom fans rejoice!
Doom Resurrection from id Software is coming to the AppStore next week, and it promises to give gamers 3-D graphics that are much improved from most first-generation iPhone games.
John Carmack and a team of about six people from Escalation Studios have been working on the game for the past six months or so. In Carmack, Apple now has one of the leading game developers in the world working with the iPhone.
“I love the iPhone,” Carmack said in an interview. “It’s a real game platform, not a tiny little toy.”
Doom Resurrection has eight levels and features about 5 hours of game play. The game will run at 30 frames per second on the newest iPod Touch and about 50 percent of that speed on the earliest iPhone units.
“If you look at it in raw hardware horsepower, the iPhone should be better in performance than the Nintendo DS and the PlayStation Portable,” Carmack said. “But the truth is, you can’t exploit it all because of software inefficiencies.”
The plot is similar to that of Doom 3 but the game takes place in another part of the space station. You are the sole Marine survivor on a remote research facility on Mars where all hell has broken loose, literally.
Players will be able to talk to other characters in the game and they can use many of the same weapons as they could in Doom 3.
BONUS: John Carmack said that Doom Resurrection has features that will be unlocked once the iPhone 3.0 software is released. Among them will be a multiplayer game where gamers can connect with each other. Sounds like a "can't miss!"
