Don Hewitt, the man who created the news program “60 Minutes“, which merges journalism with Hollywood like no other program, died on Wednesday at his home in New York. Hewitt was 86 years of age and also had a home in Manhattan.
He died from cancer, according to his wife, Marilyn Berger. Don Hewitt stated in an interview back on March 18 that physicians had found a cancerous tumor on his pancreas and that he was being admitted to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for treatment.
In 1979, he married his third wife Marilyn Berger, who was a correspondent for The Washington Post and NBC News, and who later wrote obituaries for The New York Times.
She survives him, as do two sons, Jeffrey and Steven, from his first marriage; two daughters, Lisa Cassara and Jilian Hewitt, from his second marriage; and three grandchildren.
In his own words, Hewitt said: “I consider myself a guy who married ‘show biz’ and ‘news biz.’”
