second life medical studentsThe virtual world that is Second Life continues to stretch the boundaries of our imaginations.

Now, a London medical school is having its med students practice on patients within Second Life.

Imperial College London is utilizing the virtual playground to allow its pupils to diagnose “patients.”  The pilot program hopes to provide a “more engaging learning environment.”

The college has established a virtual hospital that resembles its own brick and mortar facility.  The virtual environment mirrors reality.  If a student makes a mistake or forgets something (like scrubbing in) he or she loses points.

All of the people within the hospital are a part of the pilot program.  Imperial College says that this virtual learning environment is meant to be a supplement to help students broaden their education.
