Coming off the highest-rated episode in the series’ history, Dexter has hit a little stumbling block.

Clyde Phillips, the Showtime series’ showrunner, has decided that the fourth season, which ended on Sunday, will be his last.

The term “showrunner” usually refers to the person responsible for the day-to-day operation of a TV series. Unlike films, where directors are typically in creative control of a production, in episodic television the showrunner usually outranks the director.

Phillips said he made the decision while driving to his family’s home in Connecticut.  He’s leaving the series so he can spend more time with them.

He described it as a “hugely difficult decision” and that he had “complicated feelings about it.”

So how will this affect season five?  Coming off a show-stopping cliffhanger like the one we got on Sunday, this could be a crossroads for the show, don’t you think?
