The bloodshed in the job market continued today.
Dell, Inc. laid off an unspecified number of employees on Wednesday. This was the latest move in its effort to cut costs.
Company spokesman Ken Bissell confirmed that the layoffs mostly involved employees at the Nashville distribution and cell centers. The plant refurbishes old computers and other Dell items.
Bissell did not mention how many people were let go.
“We’re being very aggressive in reducing costs across our business,” he said.
Dell said last month that it would try to cut $4 billion in costs by the end of 2011. Dell is suffering the consequences of a slow economy as the company sells fewer computers now that consumers are scaling back.
Today’s round of layoffs also affected workers at a plant in North Carolina. Over the last 12 months, Dell has shed in excess of 9,300 around the globe (more than 10 percent of the company’s workforce).
