Google's Picasa, the popular free photo management software, has finally debuted on the Mac.

The program has been absent on the Mac for quite a while. It’s also going to be in direct competition with Apple’s iPhoto product...a product which has come with newly-issued Macs for years.

In testing, Picasa seems much faster than iPhoto, although it doesn't have the slick look of Apple’s products. Photos do import very fast and most things are intuitive, with the possible exception of folder browsing, which is still a little confusing.

Picasa doesn’t move images nor does it reorganize them. Instead, it keeps track of where your images are located on your hard disk and lets you view them in one place. If you happen to manage your photos by sorting them into folders, this is a very welcome change. iPhoto, on the other hand, transfers your photos to its own library and encourages you to sort through your photos through the iPhoto app itself.
